My wife and I have been campers most of our married lives. We have camped at literally hundreds of campgrounds all over the country over the past 30 years. We realize that campground reviews can be quite opinionated… each camper has a different set of values they look for in choosing a campground… from quiet and secluded, to active with plenty of amenities.
We travel I-95 in our RV from New England and Florida several times a year. As destination travelers, our “goal” is to get to where we’re going as comfortable as possible. That means we are looking for campgrounds along I-95 that are easy to get to, clean and well maintained, a friendly staff, have all the amenities we need as “overnighters” and are reasonably prices.
South 40 Campground in Petersburg, Virginia is one of those campgrounds. It’s easy to get to, located directly off I-95, exit 41. While it’s just off the exit, it seems miles away once you get there. Quiet, wooded and peaceful.
The amenities we need are all there including full hookups, clean rest rooms, hot showers and laundry facilities. While they also have fishing, hiking trails and a few more recreational opportunities, we don’t really need them or have the time to take them in.
For those who spend a few days there, nearby attractions include Petersburg National Battlefield and the Petersburg Area Art League. Historic Petersburg and Richmond is also within easy reach if you’re looking to explore the area.
In summary, South 40 Campground in Petersburg, Virginia, is our version of a great overnight stop campground for I-95 travelers. It’s convenient, quiet and with just the right amenities for overnight campers.
