Sacandaga Campground – Northville, NY

This was the best State Campground experience we’ve had in New York in years. The campground is part of the Adirondack Park located in Northville, NY. The sites are situated at the junction of two branches of the Sacandaga River. Some of the oldest camp sites in New York State are there, and the landscaping of the area reflects this.

Many sites are way too small, but there are areas where foliage is maintained between sites for a good sense of privacy.Big rigs could have a little difficulty in most sites, but some are suitable. The water spigots do not accomodate hoses, so filling your fresh water tank is tricky. We brought a 5-Gallon jug to tote water to the trailer. The other choice is to come in with a full tank. No hook-ups are available.

Since NYS Campgrounds allow generators, I was leary about another weekend listening to small motors. The staff seemed to isolate those with generators from the rest of us. The staff was also accomodating in moving us from our reserved site which was too small into a more suitable site. Quiet Hours & Dog Control were strictly enforced which has become rare at most State facilities.

This rustic little campground, and the great staff are worth the trip. My biggest advice: Bring several blocks to level the rig!

Leisure Livin’ Camping Resort – Nichols, NY

If you’re traveling along NYS Route 17 this is a good mid-point break. The campground is near the Susquehana River in Nichols, NY. You can see the Expressway from the campground, but the sound was minimal. The RV sites are in a fairly open field but they are HUGE. Shower and laundry facilities are effective and interior roads are rough.

The campground had recently suffered a flood before our visit, there was still some damage evident, but efforts were underway to repair problems. As a destination park, this could be a disappointment. If you’re looking for easy-on easy-off rest stop, I recommend it. There are historic towns and good eateries nearby in all directions, and the mountain setting is very relaxing.

Meadowlark RV Park – Middletown, RI

Meadowlark RV Park is located in the Newport, Rhode Island area. It’s the closest RV park to Newport. Located between first and second beach. Seems to have a loyal repeat clientel.

Mostly level, small, grass covered, back-in sites. Many seasonal campers located in front of park. Transient campers are in rear. Transient sites have electric (30 amp) only. Provision for taking on water, provided at entrance next to dump station. No activities provided. No restrooms or showers. Well behaved pets and their owners are welcome.

Reasonably priced, but cash only.

Sunset Point Trailer Park – Lubec, ME

Lubec, Maine – West Quoddy Lighthouse – and a few miles from Campobello Island, Canada. You are half-way between the North Pole and the equator. It’s a five to six hour trip north of Boston but well worth the journey for the scenery and tranquility you find there.

Sunset Point is a well kept secret. Where else can you park your rig and wake up with the Atlantic ocean right outside your door. Open field camp sites. No shade, and ever changing winds. Even in August, bring a jacket. All sites have at least water and 30amp electric, some have cable television. There are small, but clean and adequate restrooms and showers. Didn’t count, but there can’t be more than 50-60 sites accomodating tents to class A’s.
No planned activities but a wonderful place to relax and unwind and watch the tides. Kids would run out of things to do very quickly.

Trips to Roosevelt’s Vacation home, Canadian Towns, and Passamaquoddy Bay, and whale watching are not to be missed.

Merry Knoll Campground – Clayton, NY

We were looking for a quiet place with full hook-up and a nice view to spend a fall weekend. We found it all, and then some, at Merry Knoll Campground.

Located on Route 12E just three miles West of the Village of Clayton, Merry Knoll is just right for enjoying the Thousand Islands region of New York. Island Boat Tours, Historic Museums, Horseback Riding, and Fishing Excursions are all withing a few minutes’ drive from the campground.

Because of bad weather, we chose to stay put and watch the big ships run the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The view isn’t spectacular, but among all the campgrounds nearby, this was the best. Some sites are uncomfortably close to the highway, but most are along a grassy hillside overlooking the river. All the sites were level and easy to get into with a choice of pull-through or back-in.

The pool was closed for the season but appeared well-maintained and clean. Showers, Toilets, and Laundry are clean, just a little rustic. There is a playground area near the pool.

The owners are friendly and will help with everything from parking your rig to finding a great place to have dinner. The “Good Will Ambassador” is a friendly old dog named Baxter. He loves showing people around the property, mostly in a Golf Cart!

It’s useful to have extra hose and extension cords to reach some of the hook-ups.

Villages at Turning Stone RV Park – Verona, NY

The Villages at Turning Stone is a first rate camping facility located conveniently off the New York State Thruway in Verona, NY. The campground is operated by the Onieda Nation and is considered an adjunct of their Turning Stone Casino. Visitors have the choice of using a free shuttle from their site to the Casino which is located about a mile from the park.

If the casino life is not your thing the park itself stands alone as a great vacation spot. All roads and sites are paved with full hookups, including cable. The grounds and restrooms are spotless. There are several hiking trails, a pond with paddle boats and pavilion for outdoor activities in season.

We frequently travel to western New York from our home in Massachusetts and would not miss an opportunity to spend a night or several days at this great park.

Lake George Escape Camping Resort – Lake George, NY

Lake George Escape, at the end of the season, is better than at the beginning. We stayed there in mid September and had no mosquito problems. The sites are large, well kept, wooded, and with enough greenery between sites to not make you feel like your neighbors were watching every thing you were doing.

Even though Lake George Escape is a large campground it doesn’t have that large campground feel but it could be different during peak season with many more sites filled. Lake George Village is a short 10-15 minute drive with plenty to do when you get there even in the off season.

Rochester/Marion KOA – Rochester, MN

The Rochester/Marion KOA has everything you could want. It’s close to the Mayo clinic, close to all the good shopping stores and yet still in a quiet rural surrounding.

The owners were all too pleased to help with any problems we had with our trailer, and they make a fabulous pizza at a very reasonable price. They even delivered it to our site. The grounds are beautifully kept and the bathrooms and laundry are very clean. The playground is fresh and new looking and was fun for the kids.

The pool is gorgeous. The wifi works wonderful. I will stay here again for sure.

Alps Family Campground – Averill Park, NY

For a quiet night in a secluded atmosphere, Alps Family Campground won my heart. The grounds are clean and nicely landscaped, facilities are clean and reasonably modern, and the campstore is well stocked with snacks, groceries, and camping supplies.

Most of the sites seemed to be seasonal renters, but a good selection of sites are reserved for transients. I was there during the week, so despite the full appearance, the campground was extremely quiet and peaceful. There is a wooded area set aside for tents and pop-ups that appeared nearly empty.

If you’re planning to be there during peak season, reservations are strongly recommended.

Potlatch State Park – Hoodsport, WA

Potlatch is a small State Park in the Olympic National Forest system. It’s located near Shelton. There are 37 campsites, of which 18 are utility (30/50) sites, 17 are tent sites, and 2 are for bikers/hikers. Potlatch State Park does not take reservations, it’s first come, first serve campground.

It was August, mid-week (Wednesday), and I arrived around 11:00 AM. The campground was half-full, with only a few utility spots available. By Thursday, it was full (and kind of noisy!). The camping spaces are “crammed” together. There are lots of trees for good shade, but you can still look out your window and wave to your neighboring camper. Some of the utility slots are back-in, and some are “half-circles” (try “bending” your RV around that slot!). If your RV is larger than 30 feet, you may not fit in any of the utility spaces, let alone trying to get into them! The road through the camping area is narrow and runs up and down hill in a circle with sharp curves. I had a back-in spot, but trying to back in was laborious. Fortunately, a very nice young boy from the neighboring camping spot offered to help me get in.

The utility sites have an adequate place to pitch a tent next to your RV, and a fire-pit and picnic table. TV reception via antenna is adequate, not perfect, but adequate. There are hiking trails, and there is a beach across the highway. Next door to the park is a public RV resort with a laundromat, but I’m not sure if you’re “allowed” to use the laundromat if you are staying at the State Park.

I stayed two nights. If you leave your windows open while sleeping, you will hear the traffic on US Highway 101, even at 3:00 AM!
