Poland Spring Campground – Poland Spring, ME

On our way home from Northern parts of Maine, we decided to stop at Poland Spring Campground for a couple nights to just “kick back” and get ready for the long ride home.

We pulled in with no reservations as usual and found a cute little paradise. There were a lot of seasonal renters, and all were maintained to the max. The grounds are very wooded, bringing back a sense of the old days of camping. Some big rigs would have trouble in many sites, so a call ahead would be very smart.

Even in late season the store was stocked to the top with groceries, toys, gadgets, knick knacks, etc. Nearby the Poland Spring Water Company maintains a day park with interactive trails, but we chose to go to the wildlife park. If you think of the facility as a zoo, you will be deeply disappointed.

The Wildlife Park specializes in saving and rehabilitating animals for eventual return to the wild. For us this was a great end to our Maine vacation. The Black Bears and the Moose are the highlights, but the Big cats a impressive.

As for the campground, we loved it. During midweek, the place was quiet, clean, and scenic. The boat launching area is perfect for small craft with canoes, kayaks, and a small sailboat for rent. The Range Ponds are beautiful bodies of water, especially for small boats. We canoed to the nearby State Park with no other vessels on the water. A young Bald Eagle was adjusting to life without parents and we spent several hours just watching his antics.

Bring the kids and enjoy the nearby attractions and the beach area. This Campground is a destination you will remember for many years.

Hayti/Portageville KOA – Portageville, MO

This campground has new owners. We have stayed here before and stopped coming because the old owners were so rude. The campground got more and more run down.

The new owners and staff are wonderful. The campground is now clean and inviting and the store is looking fresh and new. We were too late for the pool but we were assured it was open during the summer and will be next summer also. The last owners didn’t have it open. They have FREE wireless internet, pizza delivered to your site, a tv room which is warm and cosy which also had complimentary coffee. The sites, which are level, had no trouble accomodating our 40 foot rig with 3 slides. We still had plenty of room to enjoy the grassy area at our site which had a picnic table, fire ring and a barbecue. The restrooms and showers were spotless.

I can’t tell you how different this experience was from our previous visits here. We will definately be returning next summer!

Red Apple Campground – Kennebunkport, ME

This one was a real find. Red Apple Campground was exceptional in every respect. We were looking for someplace in the Kennebunkport (Bush family summer residence) area to celebrate my wife’s Birthday. She loves the area for its quaint New England flavor and great shopping at Perkins Cove.

As we use a motorcycle for transportation, the owners offered to lend us their car to drive to an upscale restaurant for her Birthday dinner. This just capped off a wonderful stay in a beautifully maintained campground in the heart of lower coastal Maine with all it has to offer.

Shadow Brook Campground – Cooperstown, NY

We had a great time at Shadow Brook Campground. Partly because it was the end of the season, and we were pretty much alone.

Shadow Brook is a unique property surrounding a nice pond. The gravel roads are in good shape. Bathrooms, showers, and laundry are clean and modern inside with a rustic look outside. Some sites are laid out in an unconventional way, but most are back-ins. Very few have three-way hook-up, but they have a dump station and a “Honey Wagon.”

The owners were busy winterizing seasonal units and closing the Campground for the season. But that didn’t change their good customer service. We were escorted to our site, and they allowed us to stay one day past the closing date.

Nearby is Glimmerglass State Park with an awesome beach and nice walking trails. A little more down the road is the village of Cooperstown and all the attractions.

There are two other Campgrounds in the area, I’ve been to both of them, but Shadow Brook is my favorite for visiting the Cooperstown area.

American Heritage Campground – Olympia, WA

American Heritage Campground is located off I-5 Exit 99 just South of Olympia Washington, with a truck stop at the exit, which makes for ease of refuelling. The park is 1/4 of a mile off the I-5 freeway with treed sites including water, power and sewer, no cable at the present time. There is a pool, clean bathrooms and showers, large game room with viedo games and rental bikes and trikes for the kids. In the summer there is a hayride every night at 7 pm.We have stayed at this campsite twice now and have found it to be quite and very friendly as it is family operated. Recommend as a good site to explore Olympia or as a stopover heading South.

Evergreen Motel and RV Park – Pratt, KS

This little campground is right on highway 54/400 in Pratt, Kansas.

The rate here was $23.00 for a Full Hook-up, 50 amp site with free cable, free WiFi, laundry and restrooms. The campground has a pool but it was too cold to use it. There is also a restaurant right there on the property with good home country cooking.

The owners here are lovely people willing to help with anything. We have a large, long 5th wheel with 3 slideouts. Our site was so big we could pull our truck in beside our 5’er with plenty of room.
We will stay here again for sure!

Gilgal Oasis RV Park – Sequim, WA

Gilgal Oasis RV Park appears to be a relatively new and small campground, right in the middle of Sequim. The park has paved pads, however, the pads are sloped so you need to use leveling techniques. Some sites are pull through, some back in. On the “back in” slots, you will be “backed up” against another RV, but there is a wood fence for separation. This campground also offers free DSL! If you don’t have a cable, you pay a $20 refundable deposit to “borrow” a cable. However for me, I had to run the cable through the window on the opposite side of my table where I use my computer, so thus, I had a cable extending across the interior walking area in my RV. The alternative was to use my computer while sitting on the sofa (to prevent the trip hazard). Oh well….

The sites also have phone hookups, but I don’t know whether the connection is “instant” or through the phone company. The restrooms are very clean, and very private! The laundry room is also very clean, and has VCR tapes you can check out for free, as well as a paperback book exchange. If you tow a car, you park the car crosswise in front of your RV (as opposed to a slab next to your RV, like other parks have).

They are wild about lavender here, to include having a LAVENDER hose on the deep sink in the laundry room! Decent cable, about 70 channels. http://gilgaloasisrvpark.com/

Sequim Bay State Park – Sequim, WA

Sequim Bay is a small State Park near Sequim, WA and is open year round. Although there are 26 RV hookup sites, only 16 of them are currently used. Good thing… if all 26 were used, it would be cramped! The campground host had a monster RV, but the remaining sites can only accommodate 30 foot RV’s at the bare maximum. The good news is, this State Park actually has dump stations at each RV site! The bad news is, they only offer 30 amp service. Further, the sites, which are back-in, slope down to the back so I highly suggest using wheel chocks on the back wheels. TV reception via antenna is adequate. You can tune in to both Canadian and American channels. If you use your own shower, the water pressure is the best I’ve ever seen for a State Park!

The park also has 60 tent sites and a large “group camp” site. If you want to dry camp in the tent sites, your RV cannot be larger than 25 feet, sign is posted!

I traveled here in the fall and weather was beautiful! Afternoons were comfortable, mornings were cold. I came here on a Thursday and there were only about five RV’s. However, on Friday, the park was full!

This park only takes reservations May – September, after that it’s first come, first serve. The best to get here is on a Thursday, even in the fall.

This park is popular for boating, picnicking, and clamming. (However, clamming was closed for 2006 due to red tides). Further, this park attracts bird enthusiasts and people who enjoy metal detecting. The park has a cute little interpretive station where you can learn more than you ever wanted to know about clams, mussels, and oysters! There is a swing set for the children, hiking trails for the ambitious, and a horseshoe pit, softball field, and tennis court.

Northern Pride Lodge – Kokadjo, ME

This place was an experience almost beyond words. As a campground, facilities are very limited. There is only 15amp electric with no water or sewer. For a fee, you can run a garden hose to fill your tank. or come in full. There are only two transient sites, the rest are seasonal, but the lodge is fantastic. They also have several grassy tent sites on the shore.

Northern Pride Lodge sits about 30 minutes north of Greenville and Moosehead Lake. Baxter State Park is a short distance to the North, but don’t let distance fool you. The pavement ends just North of the Lodge and the trip to Baxter is completed on dirt roads owned by a lumber company. The grounds are well cared for and the Lake is beautiful. A short walk away is the “village” of Kokadjo, (pop. Not Many). Here you will find the General Store, Diner, Tavern, Video Rental, and Souvineer shop, all in one building. The Lodge specializes in Hunting and Fishing expeditions, with room and meals included. On our first night there, a hunter returned with a Black Bear. During our stay, we saw Eagles, Deer, Moose, and Loons on every day trip. It was a wildlife viewer’s paradise. The sunsets and rises were always fantastic.
For the Hunter, Fisherman, and Hiker, you could not ask for a better place to be. For a family vacation, not such a great idea. There is very little for children to do in the immediate area. We loved the extreme isolation from the real world, and a change of pace from traditional RV Parks.

Salisbury Beach State Reservation – Salisbury Beach, MA

We stopped here for a night on our way North. This State Campground is quite large and well equipped. Some facilities were closed because we were off-season, but everything that was open was nice. The grounds and Roads are well maintained by a friendly staff. The electrical systems are being upgraded to accomodate more 30/50amp rigs, but we’re fine with less juice.

The campground is isolated from the Day-Use Beach area with fencing for privacy. The Beach was narrow, but clean. You can see South to Gloucester and North to the Portsmouth, NH Bridge.

Site selection could have been better. We were tired “Roadtrippers” looking for a good night’s sleep, and we were given a site near several families tenting together and having a Pizza Party. This was too minor to complain about, so we just closed our windows.

The park is very close to all the attractions in Salisbury Beach with amusements and eateries everywhere. Over-all, this could be a good location for a family vacation.
