Of all the campgrounds my family and I have visited, Mount Rushmore/Hill City KOA is the best! They have horse stables, a restaurant, 2 pools, a waterslide, an ice cream store, and plenty of wilderness to explore. Mount Rushmore is close by too.
My kids had a magical time and beg me to go back even […]

Big Pine is a GREAT campground. We stayed there in July 2007. Every site is nestled in the pine trees, and the bathhouse was sparkling. When we did not have what we needed to level our trailer (we were relatively new to camping) the owners were very helpful, supplying us with what we needed. Also, when the little store did not have an item we needed, they were happy to suggest where to find it elsewhere in Custer.

If you can’t find an RV park or campground near Custer, South Dakota, you just aren’t looking. The billboards and signs are a distraction from the natural beauty of the area. Most places we saw from the road were no-shade, lined-up tight RV Parks. If you read enough of my stuff, you know we seldom make reservations. I had a list of three places to look at, and Roost Resort was a decisive winner.

They really feature top-of-the-line cabins and cottages, and have a small campground in the back of the property. Class A’s and large 5ths would be pushing the envelope here. There’s only a few sites on the property, each with a great view of the Black Hills. Only two-way hook-up is available and a dump station upon departure. Everything about the property is clean, quaint and quiet.

Here’s a good reason to be flexible in your travel plans. As a base to visit Wall, South Dakota and the Badlands, we planned to stay at the National Park Campground. When we got there in early September it was over 100 degrees hot. We don’t have a generator and the National Park does not have electric. We would have had to live without a fan of any kind!

Just a mile south you’ll find the Interior Campground and Motel. The sites are level gravel with little or no shade just like the National Park. For four dollars more, you can have full hook-up. We would have preferred the view from the National Park, but the heat was intense.

This was another one night stand for us. All of the services were typical of a High-Traffic KOA. The pool, showers, and store were clean and efficient. Without reservations, we were quickly checked in and escorted to our site. The nearby (and overhead) Interstate highway is an extreme distraction. The constant noise deterred any thoughts of relaxing outside.

Despite what an earlier poster said, we had no such problems at Mt Rushmore/Hill City KOA. This is a huge park about 5 miles from the monument with some 500 various type sites. It’s a very busy place so rsvp is a must in the summer. Most sites are full hookup but not all. They have a big camp store, snack bar, restaurant, horseback rides and pool.

Red Barn RV Park is a great little campground just of I-29 and about 12 miles south of the intersection of I-90. They have full hookups, and level, gravel pull thru sites. Each site has a picnic table and patio. They also have super bathrooms! The wi-fi is new there and can only connect from the porch by the office.

The facilities at this KOA were huge, and centrally located near everything, but security was a joke, with loud partying going on well past the time limit.

An aggressive German Shepherd was allowed free run of the area, and nothing was said to the owner. It was reported, which resulted in the owner (unprovable) pulling the tongue pin from the trailer hitch of the person he suspected reported the loose dog.

Roost Resort is a small campground located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The park is quiet and peaceful and in a beautiful location. Rates are extremely reasonable. The staff was very nice and made us feel at home. Most sites were under shady pines and there were great views all around!
