Rocky Gap State Park – Flintstone, MD

Rocky Gap State Park is a very picturesque park located on 243-acre Lake Habeeb. Rocky Gap offers 278 individual campsites, including 30 equipped with electric hook-ups, dump station, bathhouses, a family group site, three youth group camping areas, one boat ramp, boat rentals, laundry and a camp store.

The campground also has a nature center, game room, swimming beach, and pay phones. Fourteen mini cabins, each with electric, bunk bed and a double bed, are available for rent. Pets are allowed in four designated camp loops.

The camp sites are wooded and private. There are also several nice hiking trails here. This is a great place for either a family camping trip or just a romantic weekend with your honey.

The staff was friendly. One note.. . you must have reservations. Cumberland is the closet large city for shopping. We enjoyed our visit tremendously.

Cherry Hill Park – College Park, MD

Cherry Hill Park is a regular stopover for us on the way to Florida from our home in Maine. Don’t expect a quiet, rural atmosphere here. You’re located just of I-95, a few miles from Washington DC and less than 30 minutes to Baltimore. But Cherry Hill is extremely convenient for RVers passing through the area and looking for a clean, comfortable and reasonably priced campground to spend the night.

The park is clean and very well maintained, and they have an excellent bus service that stops right at the campground and takes you to most of the major attractions in the area. You can buy tickets for area attraction on-site too! Cherry Hill Park has a very nice camp store with a great selection of groceries and camping supplies. Amenities include a large pool, lounge, game room and the “Cherry Hill Cafe”. The facilities are clean and well maintained.

Individual sites are level but most are quite small although they can accommodate big rigs. There are plenty of pull-thrus and full hook-ups including cable TV. You definitely don’t stay here for the ambiance… it’s crowded, somewhat cramped and the kids can run rampant thru your site at times, but for us it’s always been a nice overnite stop on our way to warmer weather.

Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina – Abingdon, MD

We were a little disappointed when we arrived at Bar Harbor RV Park. The wi-fi did not work throughout the campground and apparently it hasn’t for a long time and the owners just don’t seem to care.

This campground must have been amazing 20 years ago, but time and lack of proper care has taken a toll on this facility. The bathhouses were not well maintained, the grass was thigh high and things were basically just falling apart… overgrown flower beds etc.

The people running this park were nice and helpful but when you had a problem with something they went into a defensive mode for some strange reason. It seems they take in the profits but are reluctant to invest back into the park.

Overall camping on the Bush river was beautiful and we had a great time but I just wish the park was better maintained.

Hagerstown KOA, Hagerstown, MD

We used this Hagerstown KOA as a rest stop at the beginning of a two week road trip. I can’t say anything bad about the staff, but the place is very compact. The property borders a nice, slow flowing stream at the end of a small road. The campground offered more than the basic KOA amenities including fresh cooked breakfast, pizza delivered to your site, and a nice pool area. As usual, we travel without reservations, but our check-in was quick…no escort to site.

The only caution I can offer is that the sites are the tightest I have ever seen. Had we wanted our canopy rolled out, it would have hit the slide-out of the trailer next door. People walked through our site constantly rather than follow the roads. Had we used our canopy, they would have hit their heads!

The site was a pull through that could barely handle our 25′ Trailer with SUV. The Patio area provided was not much larger than the picnic table.

It was a suitable overnight, but I can’t recommend it for anyone. Big Rigs and dog owners should be especially aware.

Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina – Abingdon, MD

Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina is located on the Bush River in Abingdon, Maryland. This campground is only 4 miles from I-95. We were there in mid-April, and it seemed like there were many seasonal campers there already. Everyhone we met on our 1 night stay was welcoming and pleasant. The office staff friendly and helpful. The road in was a bit narrow but should be no problem.

Many of the sites sit right on the river. Ours was grassy with a concrete pad, full hookups, and about 8 feet from the water. Restrooms could have been a bit cleaner but they were not all that bad.

An enjoyable stop on the way south to Virginia. We’d go back again.

Assateague Island National Park – Assategue Island, MD

For beach and wildlife lovers, this place is paradise. RV sites have paved pads, and a separate area is reserved for tents only. Another area prohibits the use of generators making it ideal for pop-ups and tents. There is no shade in either the Ocean Front or Bay Front camping areas, so being prepared will make your stay more enjoyable. Facilities are limited to Chemical Toilets and Cold Showers. I used my solar water bag and had a nice warm shower. Canoes are rented during the summer months and there are many possibilities for exploring along various interpretive trails throughout the park.

The most redeeming feature of this park is the wildlife. Two species of deer wander throughout the park. We found a family of three napping in our campsite when we returned from a day walk. They stayed with us for a couple hours. Birds are numerous with a variety of species. The wild Ponies are the highlight. It is illegal to approach or feed any of the wildlife, but a little distance is a good thing when seeing wild horses!

Because of the wildlife, ticks can be a problem here. Again, being prepared can make the difference. Good bug juice is required for people and pets.

Ocean City and the famous boardwalk is only a few minutes’ drive north from the park.

Woodlawn Campground – Delmar, MD

For North and South travelers through Maryland and Delaware along Route 13, here’s a nice place to rest and relax. Woodlawn is a small family owned park with lots of advantages. The Park is only one block off Route 13 with easy drive-through and back-in sites. Bath facilities are clean and well maintained, the park itself is wooded and shady. Ice and Firewood are sold there, and a convenience store is a short walk away. With the highway so close, traffic noise can be a problem for tents and pop-ups. For day trips, a short drive either way on nearby Route 50 can bring you East to the Ocean or West to Chesapeake Bay. Campsite prices are extremely low by today’s standards with a modest mark-up for Heaters and Air Conditioners.
