We stayed at Green River Stable from the end of September through the end of December while working at Amazon for the season.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the stables. Darrell and Erin the owners are wonderful people and very easy going. This park is not for everyone. If you enjoy dogs and horses, fun people, cook-outs, music, holiday parties, the best tenderloin in the world, being right next to a state park then you will love this campground. If you are more into rules, regulations, parking lots and city life than you should camp elsewhere.

We will definitely return to GRS as many times as we can. I rate it 5 stars out of 5 stars.

My family LOVED Indian Point RV Park. Being a family owned and operated park, the owners were understandably busy and could not personally escort us to our site, but they made every effort to help us with any questions.

The campground was well maintained, the facilities were checked frequently, the amenities were just as described, and we agreed with the ratings given by our camping guides.  The state prison wasn’t an issue, as most parks in that area are close by, and the permanent campers are friendly and helpful as well.

I’m not sure what park the previous posters stayed at, but our expectations were completely met here.

This is a large campground with an amusement park and racetrack nearby. We stayed here this past Labor Day weekend and had a great time. Although it was extremely busy, with kid everywhere we still managed to enjoy the campground. Sites are fairly small and some units are very close to each other. They have paved pull through sites, as well as unpaved and grass sites.

I’ve been told that they’ve had problems in the past with a large number of various motorized vehicles (golf carts, motorcycles, scooters, dirt bikes, etc.) throughout the campground. This year they instituted a new rule… “No 4 wheelers, ATVs, Dirt Bikes, Dune Buggies etc will be allowed in our campground. No motorized utility vehicles other than golf carts, and bicycles will be allowed.”

We definitely would return… but maybe before or after the busy summer months.

Cummins Ferry Resort Campground and Marina is one of Kentucky’s newer campgrounds. It’s located about 45 minutes south of Lexington on the Kentucky River Palisades.

This past July our family stayed there for several days. Being a newer campground, the facilities are in excellent condition. The roads and RV sites are paved and level. They have a very nice marina and some pretty good fishing!

Our drive-thru site had full hook-up (50amps). The campstore was well stocked when we were there and had a good selection of groceries and camping items. They also have a pool, playground, showers, laundry room and a pavilion.

We like to camp here because it’s located in Central Kentucky and within driving distance of many places, such as Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. There are also many local attractions and a variety of outdoor recreation activities close by.

The campground is a not too big…  it’s just right for us. We plan to return this fall.

Barren River Lake State Park has both pull-throughs and back-in sites. The good news on the pull-throughs: They are long! The bad news on the pull-throughs: Although paved, they are not level. In fact, the slots are very much “humped” in a small hill. I had to move five times before I found one that did not stress out my hydraulic levelers. Further, the pull-throughs have partial shade. The back-ins are more shady and appear fairly level, but will only accommodate small (30 foot or less) RV’s.

The park offers AAA Motor Club Discounts. The full rates are $19 for weekdays, $21 for weekends. I was surprised to find that this state park has laundry machines. Unusual to me for a state park. However, the laundry machines were outside under a cover that could be pulled down when not in use, so the laundry facilities were a little dirty. Restrooms were so so, I would wear shower shoes.

An RV Park attached to a small summer stock theater! What a concept! If you just need an overnight, this will work. If you don’t feel like cooking, take in the dinner theater ($27 for dinner and show as of this writing). The shows are only run on Tues – Sat in the summer.

The RV spaces aren’t much, they are kind of tight for navigating. There are trees for shade, but the trees are located in such a way that… well, you may or may not be able to put slides out, you may or may not be able to put your awning out. I did see some big rigs there, so I’ll say “yes” for big rigs, even though the spaces are rather tight. The sites aren’t very level. Some of the sites are electric only, some are water and electric. The electric and water connections are “side by side.” If you have an “even” numbered space, your connections will be on the correct side. If you are in an “odd” numbered space, you will need extra length water hose and electric cord.

Although you can make reservations for the dinner theater, the RV spaces are first come first served. I recommend that you be carrying water just in case “electric only” is all that’s available. The cost is the same whether you get electric only or water/electric ($18 at this writing). There were restrooms to use, but no showers.

The office personnel said the RV park rarely gets full. You just pick a spot, then go in and pay. In fact, when I was there on a night when they didn’t have a play, they weren’t too rigid about whether you pay when you arrive or wait until you are leaving. There is a community dump station, a little cumbersome to navigate around. I got decent television reception via antenna. There appears to be a WiFi, but it was very weak at the RV sites. Verizon Air Card worked a little slow.

Compared to what is on their web site there is a big difference. Walnut Meadows RV Park is OK for an overnight stay but the pool looks like it has been empty for a long, long time.

The gravel roads and sites are OK… at least they are pretty level in a big rig. Apparently Passprot America gives discounts here and there were several other motorhomes here for the night. I think that maybe they are not keeping up with the appearance as the buildings look in poor shape. I did peek in the women’s bathroom and have to say it appeared to be pretty clean.

I guess I was expecting more from what I saw on their web site. Unfortunately that seems to be the way with many of the campground web sites and then you get there and often do not get what you expected.

Holy crap, steer clear of this place. It’s a great example of genetics gone wild. We only used it as an overnight but we saw a lot of crap. The best part was the $20 fee for 3-way hook-up.

When we arrived, the place was a traffic jam of young children racing around in golf carts, mini-bikes, ATV’s, etc. I couldn’t back up enough to feel safe.

The sites are lined up in a tree free field and packed tight. Dogs run free, the bathrooms and showers are just barely useable. The basic rules of RV camping are broken here. Our neighbors were very nice people, near the end of their motorhome lifestyle. If not for them, we would have nothing nice to say about this campground.

Enough said, we moved on.

You must remember you’re reading my stuff. No reservations, no planning, just go.

We thought about campgrounds near Mammoth Cave. The KOA sits on a small hill on the highway, the Coast to Coast RV Resort is probably good, but non-members can’t use the ammenities. We looked at the National Park Campground. Check-in was a bit more complicated here because most sites are reservations. We were given a choice of two. The roads and sites are paved, mostly level, pull-thru’s. National Park tradition dictates that the back-ins are backwards, trailers and fiver’s should beware. Tents and motorhomes are cool anyplace.

The store and showers are provided by a concession vendor and nicely stocked. The bathrooms are ultra modern, even air conditioned! The hotel and restaurant service non-RV travellers. Of course the cave is just mammoth. We did the River Styx Tour, other tours are easier…other are just insane.

The ranger that checked us in used his free time to visit with us and make sure we were comfortable. He was earning his pay, and then some. We discussed the use of generators with him.

Our first night was filled with the sound of a loud, out-of-tune generator. It was coming from the old motorhome next to our site. The people sat in their rig watching videos while the rest of us listened to and smelled the fumes of their generator. Can I send a message to generator users? Please be nice. I’m starting a campaign to petition the National Park Service to ban all use of generators. Please e-mail me with your opinions, I’ll pass them on.

Our experience at Mammoth Cave was destroyed because other people needed electricity while camping! If you need electricity that bad, get a room!

On the other side, there were a few newer Class-A’s with modern generators that we couldn’t hear. I welcome them and I know the needs of long term travelling.

In general, this is a very nice, but very busy campground. Most users are tents, poppers, and small trailers. big rigs are very limited.

Leave the generator home…get a solar panel. Us tree-hugging dirt-kissers will thank you.
