Campground Reviews for October, 2005
Northern Pride Lodge – Kokadjo, ME
This place was an experience almost beyond words. As a campground, facilities are very limited. There is only 15amp electric with no water or sewer. For a fee, you can run a garden hose to fill your tank. or come in full. There are only two transient sites, the rest are seasonal, but the lodge is fantastic. They also have several grassy tent sites on the shore.
Northern Pride Lodge sits about 30 minutes north of Greenville and Moosehead Lake. Baxter State Park is a short distance to the North, but don’t let distance fool you. The pavement ends just North of the Lodge and the trip to Baxter is completed on dirt roads owned by a lumber company. The grounds are well cared for and the Lake is beautiful. A short walk away is the "village" of Kokadjo, (pop. Not Many). Here you will find the General Store, Diner, Tavern, Video Rental, and Souvineer shop, all in one building.
Salisbury Beach State Reservation – Salisbury Beach, MA
We stopped here for a night on our way North. This State Campground is quite large and well equipped. Some facilities were closed because we were off-season, but everything that was open was nice. The grounds and Roads are well maintained by a friendly staff. The electrical systems are being upgraded to accomodate more 30/50amp [...]
Salter Path Family Campground – Atlantic Beach, NC
Despite claiming that only "quiet" pets are allowed, in fact the campground was full of noisy, barking dogs. At the site next to mine, the people left their Boston Terrier tied up to their trailer and left him to bark for hours. The staff acted like it was no big deal. Then, early the next morning about dawn, several dogs began barking nonstop at each other. The final straw was around 7:30 am when I heard men’s voices right outside my tent. Turns out the town was using a bunch of PRISON INMATES to clean up the beach walkway adjacent to the campsite. The inmates were IN MY CAMPSITE ALL MORNING… just a few feet from my picnic table while I uncomfortably was making coffee. I had intended to stay until the 2pm checkout, just relaxing at my site, but between the prison inmates and the barking dogs, it was anything but relaxing.
Sacandaga Campground – Northville, NY
This was the best State Campground experience we’ve had in New York in years. The campground is part of the Adirondack Park located in Northville, NY. The sites are situated at the junction of two branches of the Sacandaga River. Some of the oldest camp sites in New York State are there, and the landscaping of the area reflects this.
Many sites are way too small, but there are areas where foliage is maintained between sites for a good sense of privacy.
Leisure Livin’ Camping Resort – Nichols, NY
If you’re traveling along NYS Route 17 this is a good mid-point break. The campground is near the Susquehana River in Nichols, NY. You can see the Expressway from the campground, but the sound was minimal. The RV sites are in a fairly open field but they are HUGE. Shower and laundry facilities are effective [...]
